In the example thus far:

A drawing with the model layout was opened in Wadiso.

The drawing was fixed to a coordinate system.

An aerial photo image was loaded into the drawing.

A model database was created (and a geodetic projection specified).

The database was populated by capturing GIS-based model elements exactly on top of the CAD model layout.

Further enhancements to the model were made (special links/tanks, outputs, elevations, etc.).

The step of populating the model by individually capturing the elements on top of the CAD backdrop was feasible in this case, due to the small number of elements. Sometimes, this is the only way to populate a model, when the CAD backdrop is not detailed/accurate enough.

In this section, however, an alternative way of building a model by converting the CAD lines is described. This may be a more feasible way, when dealing with large systems that have already been captured on an accurate CAD drawing.
