Reducing the number of candidate solutions

The only major potential drawback of an enumeration algorithm is computer time. In order to minimize the number of size combinations for which the pressure distribution is to be calculated, four techniques are employed:

grouping pipes

test on size range

cost test

size test

Only after a pipe size combination has been subjected to all four of the techniques, the pressure distribution is computed. In the pressure test the pressure distribution is calculated for all load cases. In order for the combination to pass the pressure test, a combination must meet the pressure requirements of all load cases. It is permissible for each load case to have its own required minimum pressures, which may vary from node to node.
