Time Patterns

A time pattern is a collection of multipliers (factors) that can be applied to a quantity, to allow it to vary over time. Nodal demands, reservoir heads, pump schedules, energy prices for pumping cost calculation, and water quality source inputs can all have time patterns associated with them. The time interval used in all patterns is a fixed value, set with the project's Times Settings. Within this interval, a quantity remains at a constant level, equal to the product of its nominal value and the pattern's multiplier for that time period. Although all time patterns must utilize the same time interval, each can have a different number of periods. When the simulation clock exceeds the number of periods in a pattern, the pattern wraps around to its first period again.

Every time pattern can also have a global multiplier (factor) associated with it. All the individual multipliers of the time periods in the pattern is first multiplied by this global factor, before being applied to the relevant quantity.

When the pattern “wraps” around as described above, repeat multipliers can also be utilized. These are further global multipliers, which are applied in the first pass of a time pattern, then in the second pass (i.e. first wrap period), then in the third pass, etc.
