GLS in partnership with a Canadian firm did water demand modelling including tariff analyses and meter verification using SWIFT. A dedicated web-based solution was developed for the client and is updated on a monthly basis.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality
GLS has been performing master planning for the water and sewer systems in this area since 1989 and has been updating the master planning and MIS for the entire area serviced by EMM on a regular basis. Greater Vernon Water (BC, Canada)

Western Cape Municipalities
GLS have been performing master planning for several towns in the Western Cape Province since 1990. Under initiative and with support of DPLG and DWA master planning of water and sewer systems and establishing of MIS have been completed for all towns in the Province. Through funding by DWA GLS performed a detailed study on evaluating the backlog for water and sanitation in the Province and the required interventions for eradication thereof. GLS is currently appointed at several of the Municipalities in the Province to update the master planning and MIS on a continuous basis.

Water Demand Management Strategies


Client
City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality
GLS is part of the team that established a Water Demand Management Strategy for the city, being responsible for the analysis of water consumption statistics, performing water balance analyses and assessment of water tariff structure options through income analyses.
Johannesburg Water
GLS assisted in the identification and prioritisation of measures to be implemented by Johannesburg Water as part of the overall WDM strategy and programme.
Western Cape Municipalities
Through funding by DWA and DPLG GLS established water demand strategies for each town in the Western Cape Province separately. The strategies included the standard water loss reduction measures but also other aspects, such as the investigation into water re-use potential for large industries. Specific attention was paid to the expected effect of adjusted step tariffs for water purchases by consumers, including making allowance for price elasticity.
Ubuntu Municipality
GLS acted as specialist consultant to KV3 Consulting Engineers to perform analyses of water consumption statistics and unaccounted-for-water for the four largest towns in this municipality. GLS further assisted in identifying and prioritizing water loss reduction and demand management strategies for each town.

Pipe Replacement Prioritization

City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality
GLS applied the risk based algorithms developed by the company to determine water pipe replacement prioritization for the more than 9 400 km bulk and distribution systems in the municipality.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality
The analysis for the prioritization of the refurbishment and replacing of 10 100 km of water pipes, 9 000 km of sewer pipes and more than 6 500 km of storm water pipes in the municipality’s jurisdiction area is currently being performed by GLS.
Johannesburg Water
The analysis for the prioritization of the assessment, refurbishment and replacing of 10 100 km of water pipes, 9 000 km of sewer pipes in Johannesburg's jurisdiction area was performed by GLS and updated on a regular basis.
Overstrand Municipality
GLS applied the risk based algorithms developed by the company to determine water pipe replacement prioritization for the 740 km pipes comprising all the distribution systems in the municipality.
Vitens (Netherlands)
GLS applied the risk based algorithms developed by the company and a Dutch partner to determine and simulate water pipe replacement prioritization for the 47 000 km pipes comprising all the distribution systems of the water authority.
