In order to calculate the pipe cost for any given combination of candidate pipe sizes, it must be known which pipe cost function is to be used for each pipe that has to be sized. This is specified by selecting Optimization Data > Optimization Data in Model Tables > Cost Functions (Pipe/CV), which will open the Pipe/CV table and scroll to the relevant field, viz. Cost Function.
A pipe cost functions (1 to 9) can be assigned to the Cost Function field of a pipe. These pipe cost functions should have already been specified in the Pipe Cost Data table. Initially, all pipes are by default assigned to pipe cost functions #1(Cost 1), which can then be edited (if needed) and if the pipe takes parts in the optimization (i.e. has an Optimization Group number greater than 0).
Not all pipes in the same group need to belong to the same cost function. Assigning one pipe in a group to a particular cost function does not affect any other pipe in the group. A pipe can only be assigned to one cost function (this will automatically be enforced, because the Pipe/CV table does not allow duplicate pipe entries). Pipes not assigned to a cost function but assigned to a group will always default to cost function #1 (Cost 1).
If cleaning and re-lining an existing pipe is to be considered as an option alternative to adding a new pipe, the cleaning cost of the old pipe will always default to the cost function specified in the Optimization Settings. To indicate that an existing pipe is to be considered for cleaning, the user must enter a parallel new pipe for which one of the possible sizes in the optimization is C (for Cleaning/Lining). If link numbers are specified which do not exist, or which are not pipes, the program will produce a warning message.
The "Cost Function Assignment editor" is the same table as the Pipe/CV table, it has the same special editing functions, sorting functions, customization possibilities and exporting facilities.
The cost function assignment is a property associated with each pipe/CV in the model. Therefore, the cost function numbers can also be edited directly in the Pipes/CV table, or in the Link Info box available in the Albion environment, or by the or by the selective editing features available in the Albion environment.
(The cost function assignment number is considered system specific data, which is saved as part of the system data.)
